Shanties & Canal Songs
The Shropshire Boatmen, as their ingenious and informative name suggests, are a Shropshire-based a cappella group dedicated to singing songs about boats and the sea. They started out performing traditional sea shanties, but very soon embraced their distance from the sea by celebrating the role of canals in our maritime history through song.
The heritage of our country has been forged not only by ocean going shipping, but also by the inland waterways that allowed land-locked counties such as Shropshire to export produce around the globe. This concert will bring these two boating traditions together, exploring the history and meaning of sea shanties and telling some tales of the canals.
Fine harmonies, laughter and a rousing singalong are guaranteed. Audience participation very much encouraged!
