Offa Events is back at The Hermon presenting their Christmas Extravaganza with excerpts from two of their most popular concerts this year! With Chester-based band The Time Bandits and local violinist Phoebe Rees there is a lot to look forward to in the company of lovely people including Mr & Mrs Santa!
Phoebe Rees – Multi-instrumentalist, Singer & Songwriter:
Phoebe Rees grew up in Scotland and it was in the North-West Highlands that she began learning to play the fiddle. After completing her studies as viola player in Edinburgh and London, she recently returned to her hometown of Oswestry, where she is beginning to establish herself as solo performer within the local scene. Phoebe’s music takes inspiration from her early years in the Scottish Highlands and her travels throughout the rest of the British Isles, Europe, Brazil and India. Her repertoire includes her own compositions alongside interpretations of material by musicians close to her heart. Phoebe accompanies herself on fiddle, viola and guitar.
The Time Bandits – European Early Music & More:
Since the band’s formation in 2001, they have appeared at numerous folk festivals, concerts and dances from Chippenham to the Fylde. The newest addition to their six-piece line-up is Katrina Turner on lead vocals.
The Time Bandits – why the name? It comes from Terry Gilliam’s ‘pythonesque’ movie of the same title. In the spirit of the movie, the remit of the band is to be musical ‘time travellers’, pilfering over 500 years of music and bringing it back to a modern audience.
The Time Bandits’ repertoire includes European early music and Renaissance dance tunes, traditional songs and tunes and an increasing number of their own compositions. The band’s philosophy is that early music is not for the museum, but is living music that should be played and enjoyed with a passion. The collective musical influences of the group are wide and varied including the likes of Blowzabella, Patrick Bouffard, Philip Pickett, Pyewackett, Ti-Jaz, Filarfolket and an obscure and long-defunct Chester-based band by the name of Mercer’s Daughter.
Katrina Turner – lead vocals
Helen Armstrong – violin, backing vocals
Ian Jones – melodeon, flute
Helen de Lemos – bagpipes, recorders, whistles, saxophone
Jamie Matthews – bouzouki, cittern, backing vocals
Chris Lee – electric fretted and fretless bass, mandolin
