Delivered by ArtShack artists Samuel Johnson Squire and Jack Roberts
In this workshop you will learn about how to develop a design or image into a piece of Batik.
Batik is both an art and a craft, which is becoming more popular and well known in the West as a wonderfully creative medium. The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practised for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot.
To make a batik on this one day workshop, you will draw out a design of your choice onto plain fabric, and then block out areas of this by applying hot wax using a tjanting tool or brush. Then you will paint colours into the design using brightly coloured batik inks. Once completed you will then iron out the wax to complete the work.
The workshop will be led by experienced ArtShack textile artists Dr. Jack Roberts and Maggie Allmark.
Cost £55 to include all materials, tea coffee and cake.
