AN EVENING WITH DR CHARAN RANGANATH – WHY WE REMEMBER: THE SCIENCE OF MEMORY
19:30 13th March 2024
at The Holroyd Community Theatre
OswestryAN EVENING WITH DR CHARAN RANGANATH – WHY WE REMEMBER: THE SCIENCE OF MEMORY
19:30 - 20:30 13th March 2024
More Informationoin us for an evening with pioneering neuroscientist and internationally-renowned memory researcher, Dr Charan Ranganath as he talks about his groundbreaking new book Why We Remember: The Science of Memory and How it Shapes Us.
We talk about memory as a record of the past, but here’s a surprising twist: we aren’t supposed to remember everything. In fact, we’re designed to forget. Over the course of twenty-five years, Charan Ranganath has studied the flawed, incomplete and purposefully inaccurate nature of memory to find that our brains haven’t evolved to keep a comprehensive record of events, but to extract the information needed to guide our futures.
Using fascinating case studies and testimonies, Why We Remember unveils the principles behind what and why we forget and shines new light on the silent, pervasive influence of memory on how we learn, heal and make decisions. By examining the role that attention, intention, imagination and emotion play in the storing of memories, it provides a vital user’s guide to remembering what we hold most dear.
A groundbreaking exploration of how and why memories are stored, this fascinating book from a leading neuroscientist sheds light on the latest discoveries in memory research and the quietly pervasive influence of memory on how we learn, make decisions and change.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see and listen to the world’s leading memory expert ‘live’ in Oswestry!
Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Why We Remember) or £20 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Why We Remember).

AN EVENING WITH THE LIVERBIRDS
19:30 15th March 2024
at The Holroyd Community Theatre
OswestryAN EVENING WITH THE LIVERBIRDS
19:30 - 20:30 15th March 2024
More Informationoin us for an evening with Mary McGlory and Sylvia Saunders – two members of pioneering all-female rock n’ roll band The Liverbirds – as they recount the heady days of being one of the world’s first all female rock’n’roll bands.
In the early ’60s, four friends from Liverpool formed a band. But this is not the ‘fab four’ story we know.
Mary, Sylvia, Valerie and Pamela – also known as The Liverbirds – were one of the world’s first all-female rock’n’roll bands. At an early gig, backstage at the Cavern Club, a young John Lennon told them that ‘girls don’t play guitars’.
But they took that as a challenge. Despite the early scepticism, they won over tough crowds, toured stadiums, recorded two hit albums, and played with the Kinks, Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry – all in the space of just five years.
Now, the two surviving members of the band tell their incredible story in full for the first time – capturing a lost era of liberation and rock’n’roll, as they thrived in the vibrant Merseybeat music scene and formed a friendship that has endured through the decades.
Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of The Liverbirds) or £20 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of The Liverbirds).

More InformationGood things come to those who wait, but luck favours the bold. And for Jeremy McComb, the balance comes natural. A storyteller epitomizing “been there and done that,” McComb has explored nearly every facet of the entertainment industry, all on his own terms. From radio to tour managing, releasing five albums, growing an international fan base, hitting the Billboard charts and writing songs for projects selling over 6 Million copies … including a Grammy-nominated soundtrack (Blue Collar Comedy Tour – One for the Road).
Proudly and fiercely independent in both spirit and style, Jeremy was born in Idaho as a sixth-generation musician. Music is in McComb’s DNA but he’s a distinct branch on the family tree. Obsessed with artists who share a gift for storytelling (and little else), he found inspiration in everything from Jim Croce to Tom Petty, and now bridges the canyons between country, rock and folk. McComb discovered a revelation during the last eighteen months of uncertainty and the effects of it became an influence for the songwriter. Like the rest of us, the constant state of chaos and complications led him to look back to a time when things were simpler.
Written songs on projects selling OVER 6 MILLION units. Songs recorded by country stars like Tracy Lawrence with movie and comedy soundtracks including a Grammy nominated, (Triple platinum) Movie Soundtrack. (Blue Collar Comedy Tour “One for the Road” )
Dan Smalley may just now be making a name for himself, but he already sings with the voice of experience. And he’s got the bullet scars to prove it. The Alaska native who came of age in Shreveport, Louisiana, sings his confessional, soul-baring songs with deep conviction. Smalley expresses a fresh take on Country music that knows tradition, inspired by the greats of the genre and infused with the swampy sounds of his roots, the Gospel of hardwood church pews and the impassioned delivery of R&B. Artists like Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Al Green and Willie Nelson provided a musical roadmap for Smalley to follow, and the against-the-grain success of Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson drew him to Nashville. There, he began working with producer Keith Stegall, known for his award-winning work with greats like Alan Jackson, George Jones and Zac Brown Band.
Ashley McBryde (Grammy Nominated album “Never Will”) Trace Adkins, Ray Fultcher, Randall King, Makayla Lynn, Dillon Carmichael and others have included Smalley co-writes on their recent albums.
Smalley’s experience and command on stage has landed him on bills alongside Willie Nelson, Allison Kraus, Turnpike Troubadours, Ashley McBryde, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Eli Young Band, Justin Moore, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Rogers Band and a list of notable others.
An 8 time British Country Music Association Awards winner, Northern Irishman Gary Quinn has become one of UK Country music’s more established performers. Quinn has opened for the CMA Songwriters Series, toured with Phil Vassar and William Michael Morgan and shared the stage with acts such as Kristian Bush, Sarah Darling and hall of fame songwriter Bob DiPiero. An accomplished performer, Quinn is just as comfortable with a pen in his hand and has collaborated with Grand Ole Opry member and Grammy winner Steve Wariner as well as Brett James, Trent Tomlinson, Jenn Bostic and J.P Williams.
Quinn has numerous No.1 singles on the UK Country Charts as well as being championed by Ty Bentli (Ty Bentli Show, Apple Music) and Country Line Radio. Quinn has also featured on Apple Music's 'Today's Country', 'New in Country' and 'Country Wide' as well as on Spotify's 'Wild Country', 'Next from Nashville', 'New Music Nashville', 'Nashville Stripped and 'Fresh Finds Country' playlists.
A successful tour of Denmark in February and a UK Summer full of festival dates, Quinn and his band have performed at some of Europe’s most prestigious country festivals including ‘Country2Country’ in London on numerous occasions, C2C Berlin, The Long Road Festival and Manchester’s ‘Buckle & Boots’ as well as festivals the length and breadth of the UK and Europe. Gary toured the Gold Coast of Australia in 2019 culminating in a performance on the Toyota Stage at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Additional to his live appearances has also appear on Phil Vassar’s ‘Songs From The Cellar’ TV show recorded live from Phil’s home in Tennessee.
A regular performer at the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, he has performed alongside Nashville recording artists Carlene Carter, John Brannen and Nanci Griffith as well as opening for a CMA Songwriter Series show that included Clint Black and Bill Anderson. Quinn is also no stranger to performing in Nashville having played the CMA Music Fest, the CMA Global Artist Party and iconic venues The Bluebird Cafe and The Stage on Broadway.

atSwedish Sisters 3 Piece Banjo-Punk "Baskery"
19:30 - 22:30 20th March 2024
More InformationBaskery are three sisters from Stockholm, known for their energetic live shows and unique sound created on a six-string banjo, upright bass, acoustic- and electric guitars and drums, with lots of harmonies on top. The trio quickly made a name for themselves in the Americana and Folk scene and broke some new musical grounds when they sealed a record deal with WBR bros (Los Angeles) in 2014. Since 2018 they are based in Europe. The band has made appearances on numerous internationally acclaimed festivals and earned prestigious support slots for renowned artists such as Robbie Williams, Brandie Carlisle, Gary Clark Jr, Lukas Nelson and Seth Lakeman.
The three sisters can't recall when or why they started playing, the music’s always just been there. In their late teens, the sisters joined forces with their dad, who for decades, was a one-man band playing old blues and country tunes for a living. They named the band Slaptones and released two albums on EMI Sweden.

OswestryAN EVENING WITH FIONA WILLIAMS – THE HOUSE OF BROKEN BRICKS
19:30 - 20:30 21st March 2024
Booka BookshopMore InformationJoin us for an evening with Fiona Williams as she talks about her stunning debut novel The House of Broken Bricks, a powerful tale of family, loss and life in the countryside.
Ain’t nothing wrong with being broken. Nothing at all. You’re like these houses, not a whole brick in em and look how strong they are. As Tess traces the sunrise over the floodplains, light that paints the house a startling crimson, she yearns for the comforting chaos of life as it once was.
Instead of Max and Sonny tracking dirt through the kitchen – Tess and Richard’s ‘rainbow twins’ – Tess absorbs the quiet. The nights draw in, the soil cools and Richard fights to get his winter crops planted rather than deal with the discussion he cannot bear to have.
Secrets and vines clamber over the broken red bricks and although its inhabitants seem to be withering, in the damp, crumbling soil Sonny knows that something is stirring . . . As the seasons change, and the cracks let in more light, the family might just be able to start to heal.
This is the story of a broken family, what they see and what they cannot say laid bare in their overlapping perspectives. It is a tale of life in the cracks, because in the space for acceptance, of passing and of laying to rest, the possibilities of new energy, light and love, are seeded.
Reviews
‘Shocking and powerful, it took me into a new experience. . . This is the best kind of story telling – characters I genuinely care about, and a narrative that demands to be followed.’ VICTORIA HISLOP
‘A clever, heartbreaking, heartwarming depiction of family love, grief and the possibility of hope.’ JO BROWNING WROE
‘Wonderful….brave in its deep truths about loss and love.’ INGRID PERSAUD

After finally solving the mystery of his existence and
true identity in Work of the Devil, Simon finds that he
has still not overcome the more daily challenges of
remembering what he came upstairs for, who these
grown-ups are that live with him (and what they have
done with his children?) and how can that footage be
from 2009, when he only bought those shoes a few
months ago?
“In Greek mythology, the Muses were the daughters of
Mnemosyne, goddess of memory - though ironically,
there is no easy way to remember her name. But
Memory was thus clearly regarded by the ancient
Greeks as the mother of the arts, wellspring of
inspiration, the compost in which imagination takes
rooty. Our last defence against tyranny, the consolation
of the just and the seat of the soul. Without memory, the
illusion of self crumbles. Mine, however, is shot. So
where does that leave me?'A masterclass' ***** (Scotsman). 'Outstanding stuff'

OswestryAN EVENING WITH CHRISTIE WATSON – MORAL INJURIES
19:30 - 20:30 26th March 2024
Booka BookshopMore InformationJoin us for an evening with bestselling author Christie Watson as she talks about her new novel Moral Injuries, a a page-turning thriller centred around three female medics bound by friendship, fierce ambition and one fatal night they’ve sworn to forget!
You’re trained to save the lives of others. How far would you go to save your own? Ruthlessly ambitious Olivia, anxious perfectionist Laura and free-spirited risk-taker Anjali couldn’t be more different.
Yet their friendship, which began on the first day of medical school, has kept them inseparable for twenty-five years. As wild all-nighters and exam pressures gave way to the struggles and joys of new motherhood and intense jobs, their bond remained unbreakable.
Years ago they promised that nothing would come between them, and to do anything for one another, including burying one night they have never spoken about: a drug-fuelled university party that forced them to make a deadly choice that could still destroy them.
When an eerily similar tragedy strikes involving their teenage children, everything the three women have built threatens to shatter around them, and they are left asking just how far you can stretch a friendship before it snaps.
A registered nurse for twenty years before becoming a writer and researcher, Christie Watson won the Costa First Novel Award for her debut, Tiny Sunbirds Far Away. In 2018 she published a memoir of her time as a nurse, The Language of Kindness for which we hosted an event. It is currently being adapted for television. We look forward to welcoming Christie back to Oswestry to celebrate the publication of Moral Injuies!
Reviews
An exploration of moral ambiguity and what it really means to protect a life. Watson understands human flaws with empathy and insight. I’ve never read a novel before that combines such riveting accounts of frontline medicine, female friendship and family dynamics. Unique and compelling. – ELIZABETH DAY
Moral Injuries takes the reader into a world where medicine meets morality, and every choice has a cost. With page-turning twists, it explores friendship, betrayal and the decisions that define us – NATHAN FILER, author of The Shock of the Fall
Tickets: £8 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Moral injuries) or £17 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Moral Injuries).

at Booka Bookshop
OswestryAN EVENING WITH CHRISTIAN LEWIS – HILDASAY TO HOME
19:30 - 20:30 28th March 2024
Booka BookshopMore InformationJoin us for an evening with bestselling author Christian Lewis as he talks about his new book Hildasay to Home – how he found a family by walking the UK’s coastline.
Walking saved his life. Now it will help find him a family. In the follow-up to his Sunday Times bestselling Finding Hildasay, Christian Lewis takes his next steps.
Since his time on Hildasay, Chris’ adventure has only gotten wilder. No one was more surprised than Chris when, in November 2020, he had an unlikely (seemingly destined) encounter with fellow adventurer Kate. The two turned out to be kindred spirits and – even more astonishingly – Kate made the bold decision to join Chris on the walk of a lifetime. Day in, day out, as they trekked the coastline down from Scotland together, their relationship grew, and soon the couple were thrown in at the deep end when their first child – baby Magnus – arrived.
But away from Scotland, Chris’ struggles with mental health returned. The solitude of Hildasay seemed far away, and he unravelled once again. Several times Chris was attacked by groups of youths because of his unruly appearance, and as a result he became more and more anxious and withdrawn, avoiding almost any interactions with new people. Through injuries and setbacks, with Jet the dog aging and baby Magnus growing by the day, the adventurous family of four had to find their feet and come together to complete this epic challenge. They’ve navigated the east coast of Scotland, through Yorkshire and East Anglia, and struggled through to the Jurassic Coast where Chris slowly came back into himself. With the home stretch to Wales in sight and almost half a million pounds raised, Chris reflects on all that he’s learned and the family he’s found for himself along the way.
We’re delighted to welcome Christian Lewis to Oswestry to celebrate the publication of Hildasay to Home. This is sure to be an inspirational event!
On 1 August 2017, former paratrooper Christian Lewis set off from Swansea to walk the entire coastline of the UK. Christian’s search for self-discovery, and his goal to raise awareness and funds for the veterans’ charity SSAFA, would become a journey beyond his or anyone’s expectations. From raising over a quarter of a million pounds to adopting a dog called Jet to finding love with fellow adventurer Kate, he had no idea when he started this once-in-a-lifetime experience that he would be crossing the finish line some five and a half years later with a fiancée, a baby and renewed sense of purpose. His story is one of survival and hope, but it’s also proof that, with the right mindset, anything is possible. Finding Hildasay, Christian’s first book about his journey, was a Sunday Times bestseller.
Tickets: £8 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy Hildasay to Home or £20 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Hildasay to Home).

We’ve put a little spin on this event, in that we’ll also be having a second marquee just for welsh crafters!! So if you’re wanting to represent Wales this spring, apply for a stall in our Welsh Pavilion🏴
If you grow, stitch, knit, carve, weld, brew, or simply make, we’d love to have you at our Homemade Easter Festival here at the Ironworks! We are mad about supporting local crafters and makers; we’re loving all-things-homemade.
