Formed in 2014 under the name of Jam Experiment, this group of five young players has made waves across the UK music scene since their graduation from Chetham’s Music School in Manchester. With their recent renaming to Bonsai, the band is expanding on their jazz and funk base to further incorporate rock, hip hop, classical and folk influences resulting in a distinct style that broadens their appeal to wider audiences, in particular the more adventurous rock and pop listeners. A high-energy concert with genre-crossing, multi-generational appeal!
“Bonsai’s ability to connect with the audience was exceptional…This band is bound for great things. A joy!” – Claire Martin OBE (Jazz Line-up, BBC Radio 3)
“…one of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed young bands on the UK Jazz scene.”
– London Jazz News
“Bonsai’s combination of youthful enthusiasm allied to superb musicianship has the potential of appealing to a similarly young demographic.” – Ian Mann (The Jazzmann)
“Dominic’s mercurial violin playing is the stand out feature here, his sound sometimes reminiscent of Christian Garrick when the latter is in contemporary jazz mode. Meanwhile Mansfield’s powerful drumming borrows from both rock and hip hop.” – Ian Mann (The Jazzmann)
With the release of the initial group’s first self-titled debut album ‘Jam Experiment’ in 2017, the band embarked on an extensive National launch tour, playing at festivals and clubs no lesser than the London Jazz Festival, Love Supreme Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s. Soon followed a 2018 tour of Europe, including appearances in Rome, Berlin, Prague, Krakow and Budapest complemented by playtime on BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM as well as most favourable reviews in the music press. In May 2019, now under the new name Bonsai, the launch of the second album ‘Bonsai Club’ at Pizza Express, London presented an opportunity to sample the altered line-up and new musical direction of the band.
Trombonist Rory Ingham (2017 Rising Star British Jazz Awards Winner) together with his brother and new band member Dominic Ingham on violin and vocals form now the group’s unusual frontline. Haiku-like, atmospheric lyrics delivered with a Thom Yorke like plaintiveness and scintillating trombone/violin exchanges between the ‘Ingham Brothers’ are driven forward by the bands powerhouse rhythm section of Toby Comeau on keys, Joe Lee on bass, and Jonny Mansfield (Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize Winner) on drums.
With all band members contributing their composing skills, look forward to an evening of distinctive and personal music by bright young musicians embracing a variety of styles and genres. This concert is part of a 20-date album launch tour. Early Bird tickets available now – catch them while you can!
