Martyn Joseph is a completely unique and mind blowing artist. Take everything you think you know about singer songwriters….and rip it up. For one man and a guitar he creates a performance with a huge far-reaching sound that is energetic, compelling and passionate. Be it to two hundred people or twenty thousand, he blows the crowd away night after night.
April 2019 saw him win a “Wales Folk Award” for “Here Come The Young”, the title track of his most recent album, of which Uncut magazine said “He’s never sounded more potent than he does here”
In 2018 he was honoured with a ”Spirit of Folk” Award by Folk Alliance International in Kansas USA and he also received Fatea magazine’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” here in the UK.
He is gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics and has a career spanning 30 years, 32 albums, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances.

Concerned with making music that is relevant and vital to his audience, he engages with challenging narratives tackling the complexity of the human condition, underpinned with a promise of hope. In his own words “Really what I do is to try and write songs that might step up and make some sense of a moment in time. A good song makes you feel like you’re not alone in the world.”
He is hailed as a raconteur weaving tales on topical concerns, as well as stories on the fragility of love, with a magical ability to reach out to his listeners through his passion and humour. Come and enjoy the exhibition opening and the formal launch of LGBT+ History Month 2020, in Shrewsbury.
The exhibition opening will be followd by The Jonathan Cutbill Memorial Lecture – a tribute presentation from Andrew Lumsden Gay Liberation Front (GLF) Activist and co-founder of Gay News and Justin Bengry, a leading cultural historian of sexualities and the queer past focusing on twentieth-century Britain.
Presentation 1 – ABOUT THE EVENT
Jonathan Cutbill’s life, ‘Gays the Word’, an impressive LGBT+ library goes to London
This first of two Memorial Presentations: Andrew Lumsden, a long-term friend (and , Gay Liberation Front activist), Justin Bengry, a leading cultural historian of sexualities and Maria Castrillo, Head of Special Collections at the University of London, which will be housing Jonathan’s library.
Shrewsbury resident, Jonathan Cutbill, who died in 2019 was a co-founder of Gay’s the Word bookshop, London, who created an extensive LGBTQ+ library in his home.
Presentation 2 – ABOUT THE EVENT
Saving ‘Gay’s The Word’
The second Memorial Presentation: Graham McKerrow, activist and journalist who launched ‘Capital Gay’
In April 1984, Customs officers raided Gay’s The Word and the homes of its staff and directors including Jonathan Cutbill’s and seized thousands of books, many by respected authors claiming they were indecent.
They wanted to stop the importation of all LGBT fiction and non-fiction and brought 100 charges of conspiracy to import indecent material; a major Old Bailey trial was set.
Defend Gay’s The Word campaign fought back. In 1986, shortly before the trial was due to start, Customs dropped all the charges and returned all the books. This is the story of a triumph.

Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and very-hard-to-pin-down-indie-underdog-nightmare Josie Long is back with a brand new show after a brief hiatus, during which she had a baby and so on.
It’s about the mind-bending intensity of new motherhood, but mostly about kindness, gentleness, and joy – all in all, the edgiest thing you will see this year. The aim is for you to come out of it feeling optimistic about the future, although that is a big ask. At the very least there will be some really silly voices in it, and that’s not nothing.
★★★★ Times “Brilliantly evocative, an original and unflagging spirit.”
