The Blue Haze Quartet will be playing The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock on the 16th September. Band composer Simon Deeley is a familiar musician and composer in the area. Based in Stourbridge for many years, and was regularly performing and teaching there during that time He created and ran – Jazz at the Bonded Warehouse (started it in 2000 and ran it for 16 years), which became and remains a very well known and popular Midlands jazz club. Important to say that – he moved to the Welsh Borders in 2014 (to the town of Presteigne) where he continues to compose and perform. For this concert on 17th July, he brings his new quartet over the border, to perform in Bewdley, a town that he often visited in earlier times, having been brought up in the Worcester village of Clent.
Recently reviewed by the eminent ‘The Jazz Man’ he said…’Deeley’s love of Latin and Brazilian sounds is matched by his fondness for soul and funk, with both elements combining on the languid grooves of “Soul of the West” (from the second album) with Skilton on alto and Deeley at the piano featuring as soloists. Also from the new record “Indigo Tango” introduced a new musical style, an authentically seductive tango featuring Skilton’s sultry tenor sax, Deeley’s sparse piano and Russell’s subtle, mallet led drum accompaniment.’ Part of a review by ‘The Jazz Man’ at an event at The Muse, in Brecon recently.
The group’s latest album – From the Blue Hills – consists of eleven original compositions by pianist and leader Simon Deeley. All the compositions are written in Simon’s signature style being a mix of Latin-jazz and fusion-jazz. Infectious, colourful Samba’s and Bossa Nova’s sit alongside cool-grooving jazz-fusion numbers and gentle evocative ballads. And adding a further dimension to this mix are the touches of classical genre and film music elements.
The music is brought to life by the strong, incisive and harmonically vivid keyboard playing of Simon Deeley and by the driving, powerful and skilled inter-action of Charlie Russell on drums and Ian Cooper on bass, with, over-arching all, and of course putting her always clever and individual twist on the music, the virtuoso, powerhouse Martha Skilton on saxophone.
