Imagine if you grew up in your very own fantasy castle… for the six children of Lord Howard de Walden at Chirk Castle in the 1920s that was exactly what happened.
John, Bronwen, Elisabeth, Priscilla, Gaenor and little sister Rosemary grew up playing make-believe, putting on Christmas pantomimes, and playing dress-up in a castle full of imaginary dragons and knights, princesses, and stories.
This Christmas escape the high street and join us for a family Christmas… with a twist.
This year you can have your own make-believe Christmas at Chirk Castle. Dress up and follow the fantasy trail, pose for photos and recreate a scene from the De Walden family album. Watch the family cine-film, explore the beautiful rooms and their pantomime-themed Christmas trees and decorations, inspired by the Howard De Walden family pantomimes, play with traditional toys, and sample family favourite delicacies in the tea-room. On weekends we also have festive storytelling from our favourite local storyteller Andy Harrop-Smith. Normal admission applies. National Trust members free. For Father Christmas grotto bookings please see the separate event page on our website.
Join James, who will be your tutor for the day. He has worked for many years in and around trees from managing the largest community woodland in Wales to introducing children to the wonder of woods with his Forest School work.
The course is suitable for anyone aged 16 or over.
Tickets cost £30 per person.
